Secretary of State Dennis Richardson Offers Praise to outgoing Secretary Atkins

SALEM  Secretary of State Dennis Richardson today offered a statement about his predecessor, Secretary Jeanne Atkins, thanking her for stepping up to lead the Secretary of State’s office after being appointed to the position in 2015.

“Every Oregon citizen has a duty to help shape our state.  Jeanne Atkins is a great example of someone who was asked to lead during a turbulent time in our state’s history, and she didn’t ignore the call,” Richardson stated. “In a brief period, she put her own stamp on the office by overseeing implementation of Oregon’s historic Motor Voter law.”

Atkins was sworn into office on March 11, 2015 after Governor Kitzhaber resigned and then-Secretary Kate Brown succeeded him into office.  Prior to her appointment, Atkins had served as State Director for Senator Jeff Merkley and enjoyed a career in non-profit work.

“I appreciate Secretary Atkins’ grace under fire and her willingness to come out of retirement to serve Oregon,” Richardson stated.  “I didn’t want to start this first official day without acknowledging the important role Jeanne played in ensuring core functions of our government continued to work after such a significant disruption.”

Richardson was sworn in on December 30th, 2016 and officially begins work as Oregon’s 26th Secretary of State this first week of January
